The distinction that catches people out
Uruguay has two kinds of public holiday, and the English word “holiday” flattens them into one. A feriado no laborable is the full stop: public offices, banks and most private business shut, and the day is treated as a rest day. A feriado laborable is on the calendar and closes banks and state offices, but shops, restaurants and many private businesses simply work.
The practical consequence is that “there is a holiday on Monday” tells you almost nothing on its own. Check which kind before you plan the errand — and remember that banks take extra days of their own that no one else observes, like Wednesday this week.
