What this means today
These are Friday’s closing quotes carried forward — it is Sunday and the casas de cambio are shut. The Banco Central’s official close could not be reached this morning, so the figures above are an aggregate of 41 exchange houses rather than the official rate. Nothing here is a rate you can transact at until tomorrow.

Why we lead with the mid-market rate for these two
The Banco Central publishes an official peso rate for four currencies only: the dollar, the euro, the Argentine peso and the real. There is no official Australian or Canadian rate, so the honest number is the mid-market rate — the midpoint of what the currency trades at internationally, before anyone takes a margin.
You cannot transact at it. One exchange house in the country quotes the Canadian dollar and one quotes the Australian, and their spreads run to 20 and 30 percent. Converting through U.S. dollars, or paying by card and letting the network settle near the mid-market rate, is almost always cheaper than selling either currency over a Montevideo counter.

Practical notes, not advice
Rates differ meaningfully between exchange houses a few hundred meters apart, and the spread is where the cost sits — the sell figure is the one that matters if you are bringing dollars in. Airport and hotel desks are reliably the worst rates in the country, and card transactions convert at a rate you do not control.
We publish the aggregate and the spread so you can see whether a quoted rate is normal for the day. What we will not do is tell you when to change money. That is a decision about your own circumstances, and we are a news site, not a financial adviser.

The coefficient is the lower of two indexes — wages or prices — so it tracks inflation when wages run ahead. Whether it binds your contract depends on the contract and on whether the building predates June 1968.

Reading the two numbers
Uruguayan exchange houses quote compra and venta from their own side of the counter. Compra is what they pay you for a dollar. Venta is what they charge you for one. If you are arriving with dollars, the compra figure is your rate.
Updated every weekday morning and evening. When the Banco Central rate cannot be reached we publish the aggregate and label it, rather than presenting one as the other. Cross rates for the pound, Canadian and Australian dollars are computed from the dollar rate and labeled as cross rates, because no official peso rate for them exists.
