SINAE’s situation report 105, published at 5 p.m. Saturday, records 3,962 people assisted on Aug. 21 — 2,681 in Montevideo, 1,281 in the interior. That is down from 4,101 the night before, which is the opposite of what the last two briefs expected going into the coldest stretch of the winter.

Of the Montevideo total, 2,178 were in MIDES refuges and 503 in the three evacuation centers: the police education sports hall (174), the army transport service (99) and the UTE building on Cuareim (230). There were 185 transfers, 12 medical attentions and no compulsory hospitalization. Cumulative overnight places used since the alert began now stand at 401,920.

The plant put a restructuring plan to its workers, and the union is preparing a counterproposal, saying flatly «no vamos a aceptar 150 despidos» — “we are not going to accept 150 redundancies.”

22 Rivera firefighters were under the floor of a pharmacy in Santana do Livramento when it collapsed on them yesterday morning. All of them got out unhurt, and they stayed to work the nine-hour fire to a finish.

Among the articles the Chamber of Deputies passed on Friday, one authorises the Dirección Nacional de Identificación Civil to issue a digital identity card. The shape of it: the digital cédula is accessory to the physical card, not a replacement, and cannot outlast it; you would still have to appear in person and pass the same biometric verification as for the conventional card.

The part that matters is the last clause. Both public bodies and private ones would be obliged to accept it as valid proof of identity — meaning they could not refuse it because you produced a phone instead of a card.

Three other articles in the same bill touch daily life here: a Ministry of Interior fine of 10 to 100 unidades reajustables for malicious or false calls to 911, levied on the account holder of the line; a new Criminal Code obligation to report a lost or stolen firearm within 24 hours; and a compulsory national register of public electric-vehicle charging points.

The 2025 IRPF return and its first installment, and the second installment of the Impuesto de Primaria, both fall on Monday Aug. 31. With Tuesday a national holiday and Wednesday a bank holiday, the working days remaining are tomorrow, Thursday 27, Friday 28 and the 31st itself.

One clarification worth having, because it is easy to conflate: the new IRPF categories for foreign-source capital income — rendimientos and incrementos patrimoniales earned abroad by resident individuals — took effect on Jan. 1, 2026 under Ley 20.446 and Decreto 95/026. They do not touch the return due next Monday, which covers 2025. The first return they reach is the 2026 one, filed in 2027.

The figures come from a column by Christian Di Candia — former intendente of Montevideo, now undersecretary at the housing ministry, and therefore an interested party praising a plan he started. Read with that in mind: more than 40,000 households now managing waste with their own containers, close to 1,000 containers taken off the street in a little over a year, and recyclable recovery up 38.6 percent year on year. The satisfaction numbers are his own side’s polling, not independently established.
